After being diagnosed with stage IV thyroid and trachea cancer, Mike Turnbull recently underwent a ten-hour surgery to remove the cancerous tissues and rebuild his trachea. While many of us are fortunate to call Mike Turnbull a dear friend in addition to knowing his extraordinary musicianship, countless others have experienced his incredible talent as he toured worldwide with Tom Jones for many years and now currently serves as the trombonist for Donny and Marie Osmond on The Las Vegas Strip. As Mike continues to recover from this radical surgery, he has been unable to work as medical bills continue to pile up. It is with this in mind that I am excited to share the news of a benefit concert to give Mike and his family a helping hand in this trying time of need.
As President Obama stated today in his Inauguration Speech, “Our journey is not complete until all our children, from the streets of Detroit to the hills of Appalachia to the quiet lanes of Newtown, know that they are cared for, and cherished, and always safe from harm.” It is in the spirit of this sense of duty to our children that I am pleased to announce The Las Vegas Trombone Co. will perform a benefit concert for the Childhood Nutrition Programs of the Three Square Food Bank organization on Saturday, January 26th at 4:00pm at Grouchy John’s Coffee.
On Sunday, January 20th, the Las Vegas Jazz Connection will be performing a CD Release Celebration Concert at the Las Vegas Shakespeare Company Theater (formerly the Reed Whipple Center) at 2:00pm. It has been an honor to perform and record with this jazz orchestra over the last 7 years, but I really think the bar has been raised with this, our third album, entitled “11.” Music Director, Nathan Tanouye, has truly outdone himself with these extraordinary compositions, and it forced all 28 of us in the band to rise to the occasion. I hope you’ll be able to join us for what is personally one of the most artistically satisfying ensembles I have ever had the pleasure of performing with.
I’m excited to announce that one of the fathers of modern day bass trombone technique, Eliezer Aharoni, will be in the Las Vegas area on January 31st and he has offered to conduct a free masterclass for all of our local trombonists!
